Thompson Rivers University - Old Main Pedestrian Upgrades

Rivermist Excavating helped transform the heart of Thompson Rivers University (TRU) through this project, blending infrastructure improvements with campus beautification. Our team upgraded critical utilities, including stormwater drainage, curbs, and parking lot paving, all while creating a signature pedestrian corridor to enhance daily campus life.
Utility work included storm sewer upgrades and water system upgrades. We installed over 350 metres of curbs and gutters, followed by repaving 2,000 square metres of parking lot asphalt. The pedestrian-focused enhancements featured a stunning 80,000-stone pathway with decorative lighting, landscaping, and irrigation. Working closely with TRU’s arborist, Rivermist preserved existing trees, enhancing the natural campus setting. We worked with several subcontractors on this project, including landscapers who put the finishing touches on the project, including installation of 1,500 square meters of topsoil and bark mulch, and 48 new shade trees.

The project required precise traffic and pedestrian management, as classes continued throughout construction. Additionally, wildfire risks due to interface dry grasslands prompted special safety protocols, including fire watch personnel on-site during peak fire season. Despite these challenges, Rivermist delivered a visually striking, functional, and durable outdoor space that has become a defining feature of the TRU campus, leading to additional project partnerships with the university.
